Antiretroviral therapy

Today, there is no single drug capable of curing AIDS. However, a series of drugs exists (called antiretrovirals) that may be used to counter the proliferation of the HIV virus by preventing its replication.

Generally, antiretroviral therapy used is a tri-therapy, that is, pharmacological treatment that uses three different drugs.

It is these drugs that have transformed the destiny of HIV-positive people in the West, granting them a longer life in the vast majority of cases. One of the most important factors for the long-term success of treatment, however, is that the patient respects his/her treatment scheme, taking drugs regularly. This is known as adherence or compliance to therapy.
