Nigeria is considered the giant of Africa because it is the country with the highest population, about 173 million people, just under half of whom are minors.
Nigeria has borders with Benin, Niger, Chad and Cameroon and according to the United Nations Development Programme, it ranks 158th (out of 188 countries, UNPD 2019) on the Human Development Index.

DREAM in Nigeria
The Community of Sant’Egidio’s DREAM programme has been working in Nigeria since 2005, in the healthcare centre that was set up in the Saint Vincent Hospital in Kubwa, on the outskirts of Abuja.
The DREAM centre and the hospital are run by the Daughters of Charity. The centre is very large and has an operating room, a paediatrics, a cardiology, an ophthalmology and a maternity service, an ultrasound room and a molecular biology laboratory for HIV/AIDS monitoring and tests. HIV+ patients are referred to the centre and are followed up according to the DREAM programme’s protocols and standards.
